Volo Auto Museum director names Top 10 scariest cars in film

VOLO — For some Halloween fun, we asked Volo Auto Museum Director Brian Grams to name his Top 10 scariest cars in film — many of which can be seen at the Volo Auto Museum, 27582 Volo Village Road. Counting down from 10 to one, they are:

No. 10: “The Wraith” — Charlie Sheen played the undead spirit of a murdered teen in this 1980s film, and the Dodge M4S he drove has been dubbed the most bad-a** car of the ’80s.

No. 9: “Duel” — Steven Spielberg’s directorial debut featured a homicidal 1955 Peterbuilt 281 menacing David Mann, aka Dennis Weaver, in the California Hills back in 1971.

No. 8: “The Munsters” — The Munster Koach and Drag-U-La from this iconic 1960s TV series have been highly popular attractions at the Volo Auto Museum for decades.

No. 7: “Death Proof” — Actor Kurt Russell wields a Chevy Nova as a murder weapon in this 2007 Quentin Tarantino movie.

No. 6: “Ghostbusters” — The ever popular Ecto-1 immortalized in the 1984 cult classic is a modified Cadillac Miller-Meteor that has long been a Volo Auto Museum fan favorite.

No 5: “The Hearse” — A phantom Packard hearse haunts a girl in this low-budget 1980 George Bowers frightener.

No. 4: “Maximum Overdrive” — Machines come to life in this 1986 Stephen King chiller, and a semitractor-trailer is particularly bloodthirsty.

No. 3: “Jeepers Creepers” — This 2001 horror flick features a 1941 Chevrolet Cab Over Engine with a license plate that reads BEATNGU (Be Eating You). Need we say more?

No. 2: “The Car” — According to IMDb, the local sheriff may be the only one who can stop this mysterious, black automobile (a modified Lincoln) menacing everyone with whom it comes into contact in a small Utah town.

No. 1: “Christine” — This 1958 Plymouth Fury with an evil mind of its own is the ultimate scary movie car, and it’s ready to spark the spook in your season at the Volo Auto Museum.

“You can see some of these creepy cars, and others that are also spooky but didn’t make my list, at the museum,” Grams said. “There’s the bullet-riddled Bonnie and Clyde death car, the ‘Terminator’ hearse, the ‘Alien’ Rover ... the museum is a great place for Halloween fun.”

Halloween activities at the museum this year include a meet-and-greet with Chicago horror host Svengoolie from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. Halloween-themed magic shows take place at 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. that day. For other information, call 815-385-3644, visit volocars.com or find Volo Auto Museum on Facebook.
