St. Jude to benefit from Volo's Night at the Museum

NORTHWEST HERALD Posted on 2015-03-25

VOLO – Participants in an upcoming charity walk not only will benefit a great cause, but also will enjoy a first-ever after-hours glimpse of an area landmark.

Costumers With a Cause is hosting a Night at the Museum at 7 p.m. April 3 at the Volo Auto Museum, 27582 Volo Village Road, to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Costumers are donating their time, and museum officials are providing the setting free of charge, so every penny raised goes to the charity.

At least 44 superheroes, comic book characters, princesses and more are expected to be on hand to entertain and take pictures with those attending, said Scott Whipple, who started the Midwest chapter of Costumers With a Cause. The group’s members typically attend other organizations’ events or visit children in hospitals.

“This is actually the first event our Costumers With a Cause chapter is hosting,” Whipple said. “We’re really excited to do this.”

It’s a first for the Volo Auto Museum, too, said Brian Grams, museum director. While the museum has provided a venue for other fundraisers, it’s never opened at night.

“We’ll have the lights on and four showrooms open, plus the military museum,” he said. “It’ll be a rare opportunity.”

Grams and Whipple said they formed the idea late last summer.

“We just thought it would be fun for people to have all of these great things to look at while also achieving a charity walk goal,” Grams said, noting that the museum is home to hundreds of muscle, classic and Hollywood cars, and much more.

Costumers will add to the fun, with at least three versions of Batman on hand (one for each generation of Batman vehicle at the museum), some Ghostbusters, the Scooby Doo gang and others.

“This event is for adults, it’s for kids, it’s for families,” Whipple said.

The minimum donation requested mirrors the museum ticket prices of $13.95 for adults and $8.95 for children ages 5 to 12. But more always is welcome, and 100 percent goes to the research hospital, Whipple and Grams said.
