DeLorean takeoff stalls as Cubs sink Museum’s hover board still at stake

Volo Auto Museum Press Release Posted on 2015-10-22

VOLO — As the Chicago Cubs’ wild ride zoomed upward, the Volo Auto Museum’s “Back to the Future” DeLorean winding up safe at home looked like a bad bet.

But the New York Mets dumped a Biff Tannen-sized pile of manure all over Cubs fans’ dreams of a World Series appearance as they swept the Cubs 4-0 in the National League Championship Series that ended Wednesday with an 8-3 loss.

That ended not only Cubs fans’ dreams of a World Series win, but also museum fans’ dreams of winning the DeLorean. The car was set to be given away this year in the event of a Cubs World Series triumph, as predicted in “Back to the Future Part II.” The museum’s hover board, however, will fly away this weekend.

“After the Cubs landed that wild-card playoff berth, we started to think our DeLorean promotion really could end with giving away the car,” said Brian Grams, director of the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road. “As it turned out, the Cubs might not have won it all, but they sure made it exciting, didn’t they?”

At the museum, the excitement isn’t over.

The “Back to the Future” film series will be celebrated at the Volo Auto Museum throughout the day Saturday, Oct. 24. Star 105.5 will broadcast live from 1 to 3 p.m., and visitors can pose with the DeLorean for professionally shot photos.

Museum officials also will draw a name from among those who entered the contest and will give away the hover board prop that’s been on display with the “Back to the Future” car since the 1990s.

“Everyone will be a winner with free souvenir photos, and we’ll even have a one-day display of Biff Tannen’s ’46 Ford Super DeLuxe convertible,” Grams said. “It’s going to be a really fun day.”

The Volo Auto Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and features roughly 400 classic, antique, muscle and Hollywood cars. Admission is $14.95 for adults, $8.95 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and younger. For other information, visit volocars.com, call 815-385-3644 or find Volo Auto Museum on Facebook.
