Unravel the compelling evolution of these vehicles, originally born out of necessity, now offering thrilling experiences for recreation.

Take a Journey Through the 1950s With Vintage Finned Boats

Dive into the past when you visit our collection of finned boats from the 1950s. This time was known for diners with red pleather booths, Coca Colas and jukebox tunes. It was also a time of experimentation with bright colors and unique shapes of boats.

The popular look of automobiles from the baby boom era inspired the design of fiberglass boats invented during this time. The style included big fins, chrome trim and decorative ornamentation like fake taillights. As people began spending more time on the lake or open ocean, they sought designs of bigger boats with more passenger and cabin space for their adventures.

Learn How Humans Conquered Snow With Vintage Snowmobiles

Learn How Humans Overcame Air Before Snow

Did you know people learned how to conquer the air before they conquered snow? Planes were invented in 1903, and the first snow vehicle emerged half a decade later. The first snowmobile came even later.

Many snowmobiles are considered the first design invented. One of these rare machines, the Ford Model T, is in snowmobile collection at the Volo Museum. It was first used by mail couriers and doctors who needed to travel from place to place throughout the winter months.

While many manufacturers began to make recreational snowmobiles later, only three exist today. When touring our exhibit, you can see some of the first recreational snowmobiles from makers like Suzuki and Ghia. From skis and props to skis and tracks, you'll see many different designs of snow-traveling vehicles. Our exhibit even showcases a snow plane capable of carrying four riders at speeds over 100 miles per hour.

Our Rocket Sled is another must-see item. Built in 1975, it was driven up to 150 miles per hour by a world-record speed setter known as the "Rocketman." We're also home to a vintage Snow Coupe built in the late 1960s to 1970s. Less than 200 of these models were built, making them a rarity today.
