Museum preps new football season playbook

VOLO — Officials at the Volo Auto Museum always have supported the home team.

It’s just that a great Chicago Bears football season often equated with slumping Sunday admission sales.

“When the Bears have done well, we’ve stalled,” said Brian Grams, director of the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road, Volo. “And even when they’re not doing great, ticket sales still drop off.”

This year, instead of dreading the drop, the museum is altering its playbook. When the Bears meet the Bengals at their first regular-season game Sept. 8, Volo Auto Museum will be ready.

“We will be setting up an area as a small sports pub so people will be able to take a break while visiting us and get caught up on the game,” Grams said. “The family can still enjoy a family day, and dad or mom can still get their football fix.”

A segment of the Betty Boop-themed diner will feature tall tables and stools with a 42-inch screen television mounted nearby, just off of the adjacent grand exhibit hall.

“They’ll be able to sit there, have a beer, watch the game, and right beyond the TV is a Lamborghini Diablo and amazing Duesenbergs,” Grams said. “What’s the old saying? If you can’t beat ’em, join ‘em.”

With the new sports lovers’ pub in play, an outing to the Volo Auto Museum is a fabulous way to enjoy some fall fun any day of the week, including football Sunday. Hey, where else can you get caught up on how your team is faring while also soaking in all of that stunning, gleaming chrome?

The Volo Auto Museum features roughly 300 classic, antique, muscle and Hollywood cars. And don’t miss the new Cars in Wonderland showroom with kiddy rides, Disney and Looney Tunes characters and more.
