Crystal Lake family wins ‘Superman’ pickup truck

CRYSTAL LAKE – Scott and Missy Voorhees of Crystal Lake took delivery this week of the ’63 Dodge pickup that is the Kent family farm truck in “Man of Steel.”

The truck, donated by the Volo Auto Museum, was a featured facet of this summer’s McHenry Outdoor Theater Drive to Stay Alive campaign. Theater officials have been trying to raise awareness of their need to generate sufficient funds to buy digital projector and related equipment as the movie industry prepares to switch over to digital-only film distribution.

The Volo Auto Museum and Radio Station 102.3 XLC joined forces for a summer-long cross-promotion for the theater, located at Chapel Hill and Lincoln Roads, McHenry. The promotion culminated with Super Hero Night Aug. 24, at which numbers were drawn to try to find a winner for the truck.

However, no winners came forward after several ticket stub numbers were announced. So theater owner Scott Dehn decided to post new ticket stub numbers daily on the Outdoor’s Facebook page until a winner was located.

“My younger son was checking that,” said Scott Voorhees. “He was checking it often.”

Voorhees and his wife, Missy, have three children. They are Cassie, 15, Nate, 12, and Matt, 11. The truck will be Cassie’s first vehicle, Mr. Voorhees said.

“She is pretty excited,” he said. “It’s nice for me, too, because now she has a good truck with a great story behind it.”

Scott Voorhees said he and his family are big fans of the Outdoor. Along with supporting Volo and XLC’s promotion, they have been voting daily for the McHenry Outdoor in Honda’s Project Drive-In. Voting ends 11 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at http://projectdrivein.com/#vote_111.

Dehn said community support has been outstanding and gratifying.

“Attendance has been huge,” said Dehn, noting that he not only saw record numbers of customers at the theater, but also that his Facebook fan base grew seven-fold during the campaign. “It’s been one of the best summers I can remember, and a lot of the credit has to go to Brian (Grams) and the Volo Auto Museum.”
