Rename the Volo Auto Museum; win $5,000

“That name doesn't do justice to an attraction that winds through a half-dozen warehouse-size buildings, and whose exhibits include a roadside bomb from Iraq, a Bonnie and Clyde Death Car, and a 14-foot-tall animated King Kong.” – roadsideamerica.com, referring to the Volo Auto Museum in a recent story.

VOLO — It might cost you the price of an admission ticket to gain the right inspiration, but it’s worth $5,000 to the person who comes up with a winning replacement for the name of a certain 56-year-old museum in Volo.

Owners at the Volo Auto Museum have been pondering changing its name for years, said Brian Grams, museum director and part of the family that founded the landmark attraction at 27582 Volo Village Road back in 1960.

“We’re so much more than an auto museum,” he said, noting the ever-increasing variety of exhibits that now include everything from vintage tractors and snowmobiles to military memorabilia and robots. “Some people think that even the word ‘museum’ has a certain stodgy or boring stigma to it.”

As anyone who’s recently been to the place soon-to-be-formerly-known-as the Volo Auto Museum would attest, neither stodgy nor boring apply.

The Volo Auto Museum has grown over the years from a single, metal-walled, gravel-floored shed featuring dilapidated jalopies to a sprawling complex of structures brimming with all manner of marvels. Its recently revised website touts more than 33 exhibits. The longstanding and ever-popular muscle and Hollywood cars remain, but now mix with everything from scooters to cycles, vintage kiddie rides and antique outboards.

A name more reflective of the museum’s decidedly un-one-sided appeal is wanted, and Grams said the family is looking to the public for ideas. To submit a name for consideration, click the applicable link at volocars.com and complete the form. Entrants must be at least 18 years of age. Nominations will be taken until July 31. If a winning suggestion is found, its author will be notified shortly thereafter.

“If we use your suggestion, you’ll win $5,000,” Grams said. “You can learn more about us at volocars.com, but you really have to see it to believe it.”

The Volo Auto Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. It features roughly 400 classic, antique, muscle and Hollywood cars — and so much more. Admission is $14.95 for adults, $8.95 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and younger. For other information, call 815-385-3644 or find Volo Auto Museum on Facebook.
