The De Dion Bouton Motor Tricycle is probably one of the most significant historical motor vehicles you've never heard of.  This tricycle is among the first economically successful motorized vehicles produced before 1900, and it's four-stroke, single cylinder motor was a genuine innovation in engineering for it's day.  The original De Dion Bouton Motor Tricycle engine was prototype'd in 1895 by Jules Albert De Dion, Georges Bouton and Charles Armand in Paris, which after nearly 2 years of development entered production with a larger 211 cc motor.  The sturdy tubular steel frame provided a rear axle with track of 3 feet.  Transmission was a very straightforward affair consisting of a direct chain drive that could be pedaled if the engine was not running. The Motor Tricycle was capable of impressive performance compared to the few temperamental motorcars available at the time.  On April 13th, 1902, Frenchman Georges Osmont set a speed record of 109 kilometers per hour in Nice, France.  The De Dion Bouton Motor Tricycle remained in production for a decade and the model was licensed for production by other manufacturers in several European countries, as well as England and the United States. The example showcased here is a beautifully restored and maintained example brought to Volo Classic Cars by an American collector who acquired if from Holland some years prior.  The Motor Tricycle is quite capable of running and the wheels have been refurbished with durable steel rims and modern Durandal "Antique" tires.  Steel, leather and rubber are all excellent with an overall presentation undoubtedly fit for a Museum.  This Veteran Era tricycle is eligible for the world-famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and likely deliver a very competitive performance for it's solo rider.  Here is the opportunity to own a genuine relic of automotive history.  Youtube video available upon request.  Call our classic car division at 815-385-8408 for video and/or vehicle information.
